General Membership Meeting
February 17, 2023
Alaskan Steakhouse
President Fred
Sheen called the meeting to order at 12:00 pm at the Alaskan
Steakhouse. 29 members and guests attended. A quorum was present.
Fred asked the
Delta Trivia Question: Identify the Polar Bear Plungers shown on
the back of the agenda. Answer: Rochester (Ed “Shop-Rite” Larson;
Ron “The Man of Principals” Magee; North Star Willoughby and Bobby
“Mr. Fitness” Kezer.
The Chamber

January Membership
Minutes were presented to the membership for approval. MMSP Cleeta
Barger/LTC Robert Cornelius to approve same.
Claire read the
Treasurer’s Report, stating as follows: The Chamber General Account
Balance is $12,073.82, Community Service Fund is $109,910.70 and
Visitors Information Center Account is $5,672.64, for a total
balance on all accounts of $127,657.16. MMSP Cleeta Barger/Janet
Boyer to approve the report as read.
Fred gave a report
on the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce, Local Chamber Outreach
Committee, stating they are working on local chamber issues such as
ways to improve by-laws and ways to present issues to the
legislature. He is attending the legislative tie-in in Juneau on
February 23-24 and will bring our chamber’s issues before
legislators. He reported the Borough Charter Commission is still
waiting on info from the state assessor. He further stated that he
attended this month’s city council meeting and the council has
agreed to consider his request to transfer the visitor information
center to the chamber. Fred also welcomed new board member, Chuck
Hardy.
Vice President
Cleeta Barger reported on the Teck Pogo Roundtable Meeting stating
there is electricity to the substation located behind the permanent
housing installation. Pogo currently has 20 employees in the
original camp and are looking for more. She said the rest of the
people there are contractors. She also stated they have started
digging the tunnels and they are 100 feet into one of them and 50
feet into the other. Pogo is slated to open in December 2005. She
reported that news from the GMD Roundtable meeting is the army is
having to go out to bid for housing on or off post and that Alaska
troops are leaving in September and there will only be about 400
troops remaining in Alaska at Ft. Greely and Ft. Wainwright.
Executive Director
Brenda Peterson attached a copy of the chamber’s new donation
guidelines and a copy of the donations made by the chamber for 2004
to the agenda packet and gave a brief explanation of both.
Activities
Coordinator Martha Bryant gave a brief report about the results of
the Festival of Lights event and thanked volunteers for their help;
LTC Robert Cornelius for taking “the plunge”; and all the sponsors
for helping to make this event a success. Martha also attached a
written report to the agenda.
A forum was held at
this chamber meeting whereby key city officials presented their top
community legislative priorities for 2005 as follows: Speaking for
the City of Delta was Pete Halgren, City Administrator who stated
the city’s priorities were 1. Down-Town arterial Street and school
access paving; 2. Purchase City Park from Mental Health Trust; 3.
Recreation Center Improvements; 4. Construct Mausoleum at municipal
Cemetery; and, 5. Reallocate remainder of EDA Grant match to Park
Maintenance & Playground Equipment. Representing the Deltana
Corporation was Paul Knopp who stated their priorities include 1.
Library – sealed cabinets for displaying pictures and artifacts,
shelving and chairs; 2. Emergency Services Upgrade – space to house
a rescue vehicle for the Big D area and a truck bay for the fire
truck for the Clearwater area; and, 3. Souhrada Road – street light
or 4-way stop and finish gravel resurfacing. Superintendent, Dan
Beck and Elementary Principal, Sandy Hill represented the Delta/Greely
School District. Their one priority is to complete the new
elementary school – furnishings, playground equipment, bleachers,
shelving, computers, etc.
A motion was made
by Cleeta Barger and seconded by Janet Boyer to bring last month’s
tabled motion to the floor concerning chamber support for the new
Delta Elementary School. Discussion followed and a vote was taken
to make the completion of the new Delta Elementary School the
chamber’s top priority for 2005, motion passed.
Delta Veterinary
Service was drawn to be the Big Bucks winner of $30.00 but there was
no representative in attendance. $5.00 will be added to March’s Big
Bucks prize making it worth $35.00.
Victorian Inn Bed &
Breakfast was drawn to be the March Member Spotlight.
Jon Taylor-Lawton
from Job Service was drawn to be the door prize winner of a large
candy bouquet provided by Ribelin Lowell & Company.
Meeting was
adjourned at 12:50 P.M.
