Fred asked the Delta Trivia
Question: Who was the Medal of Honor winner for whom Fort Greely is
named? Answer: Adolphus W. Greely. Greely was a 36 year old U.S.
Army Lieutenant in 1881 when he led a 25 man scientific expedition
into the Canadian Arctic to establish a circumpolar station. Only
Greely and 6 of his men survived. He received a Medal of Honor from
Congress in 1935 at the age of 91. He died seven months later.

Fred Sheen, Board President,
stated the subject regarding the chamber’s request to attain
ownership of the visitor center was on the city council’s agenda
Tuesday evening and the council informed him there will have to be a
survey completed before any decisions can be made. He further
stated that he had attended a tour of the Pogo Mine and had met with
Governor Murkowski and other state officials. He also stated that
he would be attending the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce (ASCC)
board meeting in Anchorage June 22nd and 23rd
and would bring before the board our resolutions concerning signage
along the highway and the Boundary Commission study passed at the
May membership meeting and would ask for ASCC’s support.
Brenda Peterson, Executive
Director, welcomed Activities Coordinator Martha Kimball back from a
family emergency leave out of state. She reported the Friendly
Frontier Days event was a tremendous success and she has received
lots of emails and telephone calls with positive comments about the
event. She further stated many people volunteered many hours to make
it all come together. She informed the group that it is now time to
write letters of support for nominating the Richardson Highway as a
scenic byway under the Scenic Byways Program and requested the
letters be sent to the chamber office by June 25th.
Martha Kimball, Activities
Coordinator, informed the membership that the Northern Rockies
Alaska Highway Tourism Association Legacy Tour would be arriving in
Delta Junction on July 9th. She stated the Chamber would
be hosting a barbeque cookout reception for the tour group and that
everyone is invited to attend. She also stated the grant funds have
already been spent and that anyone wishing to contribute to this
event should contact her and that she would also be in contact with
members for support.
Cleeta Barger, board member and
chamber representative on the Teck-Pogo and GMD Roundtable
Committees stated the Teck Pogo Roundtable meeting last week had
been canceled. She further stated that the GMD Roundtable committee
is seeing fewer GMD representatives at the meetings but community
members are still attending regularly.
Guest speaker, Edgar Blatchford,
Commissioner, State of Alaska, Department of Community and Economic
Development stated that he has been sent out by Governor Murkowski
to “beat the bushes” in support of the POMV. The POMV or Percent of
Market Value is a plan based on how the Permanent Fund Dividend
(PFD) is managed. He stated the POMV would pay out a maximum of 5
percent of the fund’s value each year. One half of the 5% would go
to PFD checks to Alaskan residents and the other one half would go
toward education which would then allow the state funds that are
presently going to schools to be applied to help balance the
budget. He further stated there is a fiscal gap between revenues
coming into the state and revenues going out and that it would be
best to “bite the bullet” and pass the question on to the people now
to see how they want to solve the problem. He urged voters to
support the POMV. A question and answer session followed.
Steve Van Sant, Alaska State
Assessor, stated that he has been gathering information concerning
area properties in order to build models for the Local Boundary
Commission as guidelines in determining property values. He further
stated that he will be working with Cleeta Barger during the
process. A question and answer session also followed.
Kathy Sonnichsen, Salcha-Delta
Soil & Water Conservation District was drawn to be the Big Bucks

jackpot will be worth $30.00.
